Overview

The scholarships are offered by the Swiss Confederation to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and countries around the world, and are administered by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS/ESKAS). Research Fellowships enable early-career researchers pursuing a PhD in their home country to undertake a research project in Switzerland for 6 to 12 months, while PhD Scholarships support researchers who have completed a Master's degree to pursue a doctorate in Switzerland for up to 36 months.

Eligibility Criteria

Be a South African citizen
Be a highly qualified researcher
Hold a Master's degree or equivalent qualification
Identify a Swiss academic supervisor willing to endorse the research project
Submit a detailed research proposal and supporting documentation

Application Process

Applications must be submitted online through the Grants Online (GO ESKAS) system before the deadline; applications by email or paper are not accepted. Applicants must identify an academic supervisor in Switzerland who provides a letter of support, and prepare a CV, motivation letter, research proposal, certified certificates and transcripts, a passport copy and the contact details of two professors.
