Overview

The African Business Education Initiative (ABE Initiative) is a JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Programme that provides young African professionals with opportunities to pursue Master's degree studies at Japanese universities, participate in internships and develop professional networks between Japan and Africa. The programme aims to foster human resources for industry and business who can contribute to and sustain Africa's economic growth, and to develop people who can serve as a bridge between businesses in Japan and Africa.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be between 22 and 39 years of age as at 1 April 2027
  • Hold a Bachelor's degree (B-Tech included) in a related field (NQF level 7)
  • Have sufficient English proficiency and meet the applicable JICA work experience requirements
  • Belong to the identified priority sectors and target organisations

Application Process

Applicants submit the completed application package to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) by email, following the JICA General Information, the Supplemental Information for South Africa and the application form. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed in October 2026 and matched to Japanese universities.
